: paul ryan tried to say the replacement him of the president dealing with the economy and it is team to bring in a new team. i don't think the white house remembers. >>shepard: and new to judith miller, adjunct fellow at the manhattan institute. >>guest: it was the speech of a president running if re-election, not a hint of apology for america for the values in this speech, a lot of toughness, there was almost a focus only on the middle east and the muslim world. no mention of china, russia, the other trouble spots. it was all, fellow, here is what we expect of you. pull up your socks. let's cut the whining about outrage. look at your responsibilities to your people, to free speech, to the values of the united nations and to our values. he set some standards. >>shepard: he was tougher in this speech against those in the muslim world whom you mentioned than he has been in previous addresses. >>guest: very much so. there was no islam is a great religion, none of that today. there was just a statement about how important it is for these new countries feeling their way, led by new men, t

on the campaign trail, erick, paul ryan, the republican vice presidential nominee, he's making some serious accusations against joe biden. but joe biden is responding. listen to what joe biden said today. >> for the previous eight years all the policies that congressman ryan voted for and governor romney said he supported, all those policies in a mere eight years, they doubled the national debt. they doubled the national debt from what they inherited in 2001. >> he's right on that because the debt was about $5 trillion when president bush took office, more than $10 trillion when he left office. i think he's referring to the two tax cuts that weren't paid for, the precipitation drug benefits that weren't paid for, two wars, iraq and afghanistan that weren't paid for that caused so much, at least 80% or 90% of that debt. >> well, you know, i actually don't think the wars caused added as much, but a lot of stuff did. here's a fact as well, yes, president bush left office with a double national debt. here's another fact the democrats don't like. president obama has added more to the national de
. this claim by the republicans, i give it to pinocchios. obama will claim that are ryan's plan for medicare will for seniors to pay $6,400 more a year to make up for cuts in the program. this is an old democratic attack that has been around for a while. the problem is it is based on an earlier version of ryan's plan. that is another thing i have given two pinocchios. people should always be aware of dire predictions far off in the future. the $6,400 figure refers to an analysis of cbo estimates of a different, less generous ryan plan that goes to the year 2022. they make no estimates of the new version, except to say that beneficiaries might face higher costs. the plan was changed in other ways too. it changed the option of traditional medicare. it also decided to set the feature growth rate for medicare to the same matter accused by obama in his budget so there would not be a difference there. a study published recently by a journal of the american medical association suggests the average cost to additional medicare would be on the $800 more a year in the ryan plan if it had been in place

and paul ryan's campaign which was thought focused on the jobs and economy has been forced into a broadened portfolio to include foreign policy and international affairs. it turned out to be fortuitous. there was a lot of speculation that mitt romney's relative inexperience one-term governor of massachusetts up against a commander-in-chief that claimed to kill bin laden would be a real liability. we've seen in recent weeks mr. romney has been able to get on offense. he was criticized for his early statements suggesting that the cairo embassy remarks attacks on benghazi were inappropriate. when you look at the subsequent list of alleged gaffs, misstatements and inappropriate rhetoric the president has been accused of even suggesting egypt isn't an ally made it possible for mr. romney to take more offensive approach on foreign policy and go up against the president to suggest he has not been a strong leader. bill: carl we'll be back to you in a moment. as soon as we see governor romney we'll bring our viewers to that event. meanwhile another one in new york and martha has that. martha: big da

. for example, listen to what paul ryan, romney's running mate, had to say about obama's foreign policy yesterday while campaigning in ohio, zoraida. >> i think the president on too many occasions has deferred our foreign policy leadership to the u.n. security council, to the u.n., this means russia and china get to veto what we want to do. why do we want to give them that kind of clout over our national security interests? >> the goal here is to paint president obama as projecting weakness. ryan yesterday compared the situation in the middle east to tehran in 1979. you know, calling to mind the hostage crisis that helped undermine president jimmy carter's re-election bid. we've heard that many times before, zoraida. we'll see if that works this time. >> both candidates are speaking this morning. what do they hope to accomplish today. >> for the president, being president has -- is both an advantage and burden. the burden as elise mentioned earlier, he has to soothe anxieties both here and overseas about the middle east. but politically, he gets to look presidential. mitt romney doesn't

with republican vice presidential candidate paul ryan, himself a packers fan. >> give me a break. it is time to get the real refs. >> reporter: the real refs have been locked out since june, as part of a labor dispute. all season, the replacement refs the league brought in have been the source of enormous frustration. so, who are they? according to espn, the man who called last night's touchdown is a local executive for bank of america who only officiated high school and junior college football games. today, we have also learned that another replacement ref -- not involved in last night's game -- has been fired from something called the lingerie football league for incompetence. if there's any good to come out of this, aside for seattle fans, >> oh, my god it's amazing. it was the best seahawks game i've ever seen. >> reporter: it's that this uproar may help end the lookout. tonight, the two sides are reportedly back at the table. dan harris, abc news, new york. >>> now i want to bring in michael wilbon from our espn co-hosts of "pardon the interruption". michael, let me get you to say what

there is a brand new cnn poll of polls, and it shows the romney/ryan ticket is running six points behind the obama/biden ticket. we've also got some new florida numbers as well. that shows a four-point edge for the democrats. let me remind you, that's a poll of polls, so the numbers are the numbers. there's no margin of error. what you see is what you get, at least according to the poll. we're going to hear from the president again next hour. we'll speak at the clinton global initiative. he will take his turn -- like i said, busy day. don't try to drive in new york city. oh, my lord. now, though, wolf blitzer gets to rest quietly in busy washington, d.c. he joins me live t talk a little bit about this. when i watched governor romney speaking at the clinton global initiative, a, he looked very presidential as he gave this address. b, he talked foreign aid and foreign policy, and i want to get your take on his word. look, we spend a lot of money on foreign aid around this world. are we doing it the right way? he says no. >> are you running a sound bite or do you want me to just talk? >> i want you t
on the president's foreign policy 37 ryan drawing a parallel to the iran hossage crisis in 1979. >> he made the case the power of his personality and purchase situation powers would calm things in the muslim world. would make people respect us and like us that much more. i mean, they are on tv and -- reminds you of 1979 tehran but they are burning our flags and capitals all around the world. they are storming our embassies. we lost four of our diplomats. >> wolf blitzer who covered 1979 tehran would say not quite so much. at least certainly not at this stage yet. he spent a lot of time there and he says that's overstating it. >>> also criticism today about why the president is not meeting with any world leaders face t face. he will make a stop at "the view." robin wexler, former democratic congressman. he is an obama supporter. thank you for talking with us. why is he not doing any of these one-on-one meetings when you look back historically, president bush met with a list of leaders. even just last year, president obama himself was meeting with 11 leaders. why not meetings one-on-one? seem
